Coffee Hydration Calculator
Find out the net hydration effect of your daily coffee and tea intake, and how much additional water you need.
Does Coffee Dehydrate You?
The short answer is no, for regular consumers. While caffeine is a mild diuretic, the water content of coffee and tea far exceeds the additional fluid lost. Studies show moderate coffee intake hydrates about as effectively as water.
Brewed coffee: 95 mg per 8 oz
Espresso: 63 mg per shot
Black tea: 47 mg per 8 oz
Green tea: 28 mg per 8 oz
People who are not regular caffeine consumers may experience a slightly larger diuretic effect, but net hydration remains positive. The FDA recommends no more than 400 mg of caffeine per day for most adults.
